The Chills – Pink Frost

Released on Kaleidoscope World in 1986.   Indeed, a lost indie treasure  from the early 80′s.  It was recently resurrected by the band MGMT, who covered it on their compilation album, Late Night Tales.

Pink Frost  meets all 3 of my critera for a great early 80′s song:

- bass that isn’t afraid to be front and center
- slightly under-produced sound
- experimental use of echo and reverb

This song sounds a lot like a U2 B-side from 1984 called Boomerang II.   Take a listen. The production styles are very similar.

This is a very special request from a fan all the way in New Zealand. Brett, thank you for showing this uncultured American that New Zealand exports other great bands besides Flight of the Conchords. ;)

Sigur Rós – Untitled #8

Recorded live for the DVD Heima, released in 2007.  A great request from Derek, for a couple reasons:

#1:  He mentioned that this song is great to listen to at night, which is something I’ve always wanted to talk about – how some songs elicit feelings of a certain time of day, or a certain season.  (Over the years, I’ve ascribed a season to almost every U2 album.  More on that later.)

#2: One of the guys in this band plays a bowed guitar.   I’ve never seen anything like this before.  For those of you who have:  A guitar has a flat bridge, so how do you bow the strings in the middle?  Can you actually play a chord with a bow?  Wouldn’t the steel guitar strings totally destroy it?

Hmm. Regardless. This song is awesome, and yes.. best listened to at night.  I should stop asking questions and just enjoy the music.

Alizée – Moi… Lolita

Released on Gourmandises  in 2001.  This is my first foray into “international” music,  so bear with me here.

In the early 2000′s,  Alizée (pronounced Ah-lee-zay) had a string of Top 40 hits in France, and this song was one of them.   Good thing my readers are confined to about 3 postal codes, none of which are in Europe.   So you guys can go ahead and think that I’m discovering some exotic artist on the fringe of the French music scene.   (Although one trip to Google will disprove that).

If this goes over well, I’ve got a few more international songs up my sleeve.
